When is the ‘right’ time to make changes? I think the human mind is programmed to initially find a reason (or 10) to hold off on doing something that involves time, money and/or risk. Think about it, how many times have you thought about changing jobs, investing your money, ending a relationship that wasn’t working or getting ‘healthy’? Intuitively you know what you need or want to do AND that it would likely improve your life, yet you’re attached to the familiar, rote way you’ve grown accustomed to day after day. Best part – while we hold on to this familiar way, we complain and grumble (and repeat ourselves ten-fold) to anyone who’ll listen.
So why don’t we let go of the old, not-working-so-well-ways and make the changes that we long for? Do you wonder about this? For me it’s a combination of fear (letting go of something I know for something that I don’t) and procrastination (trying something that I may not know how to do as well for something, that while it may not be working well for me, I think I know how to do it well). It’s like going to a foreign country that is known to have great coffee and going to Starbucks because you know what you’ll get – familiar.
As someone who’s about to turn 50 this year, I’ve been thinking a lot about the aforementioned - (there's a reason people refer to this time as mid-life crisis) it's all about how have I done, what am I doing now and what do I want the next chapter of my life to look like? Here's what I know - I want to LOVE my life, I want to feel energized by my choices AND I also thrive on stability and routine (not to be confused with rote and boring). Life is about evolving and growing - however everyone's pace is different. Some people hop on the scariest roller coaster first - jump in head first and are willing to take bigger risks. Others need some warm-up time and need to go on some smaller rides first. Either are OK. Both will both foster the same sensation in your brain - creativity, motivation and new-found energy. At any turn we can make a new decision that could dramatically improve the quality of our lives. What change have you been procrastinating on making? What's one new choice you can make today to move the needle forward?
I realize that often making some of these big changes takes support, accountability and sometimes, a teacher (we need to be taught how to do some things differently). That is the business I am in!
